In an effort to bring awareness to both the similarities and differences in cultures of students in the US and The Republic of South Sudan, Alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan President, Joan Hecht, conducted Pen Pal exchanges between students from various areas within the two countries. Through these exchanges, we sought to encourage dialogue, understanding and learning experiences for students in both countries.

One of the Pen-Pal programs was conducted prior to the Independence of South Sudan and one shortly thereafter. *This is an on-going program as security and communication issues allow, helping us to record the growth of The Republic of South Sudan education system and in helping to build lasting relationships and cultural understanding between students, who may one day, be leaders in their respective countries.

  • The first Pen Pal exchange was recorded 8-27-2009. The questions were provided by students in San Diego, California school district and the answers were provided by students in Twic County, South Sudan.

  • The second Pen Pal Exchange was recorded 8-01-2011. The questions were provided by students at Fieldstone Middle School in Montvale, New Jersey. Answers were provided by students in Pajut South Sudan).
